Professionalism in the Workplace!

During the week of September 2nd, nearly 200 Federal Work Study students attended 6 professionalism workshops spread out over 4 days in North Hall’s cafeteria. Group discussions included topics related to workplace expectations, office attire, punctuality, and appropriate behavior.

After attending the workshops students were then given permission to begin working on the John Jay campus. Much rejoicing occurred.

We are excited to announce that one of our John Jay alumni, Jeffrey Jimenez, has been one of the first winner's in the national City Year Twitter contest! Jeffrey Jimenez was born and raised in Manhattan eventually deciding to pursue his bachelor's degree at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Here he discovered his passion for the sociology of crime. He took particular interest in the general lack of quality education in low income areas. As an undergraduate he addressed these issues by volunteering with several offices on campus. He graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and minors in philosophy and economics.

Post-graduation Jeffrey decided to get involved in City Year in order to give back to his community and further involve himself in working on educational access issues. In this role he has been able to make positive changes in children's lives. He has been tweeting about this experience as part of the #makebetterhappen campaign. The #makebetterhappen campaign is an integrated marketing campaign rooted in Twitter that features actual City Year corps members in and around the schools they serve. Click here to check out a video PSA from the campaign. Because of Jeffrey's impact and the stories he's shared over Twitter, he was selected out of 2500 corps members to fly to City Year Los Angeles to engage in best practice sharing with corps members at that site.

We are very excited to see our alumni succeeding and continuing their work towards social justice. We wish Jeffrey all the best as he continues on his academic and professional journey. For those of you interested in working with City Year you can gain more information by visiting their website at www.cityyear.org.
