All of our staff members have recently been Safe Zone certified by John Jay's Counseling Department! All of the staff members participated in a training in order to help create a more inclusive environment for our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning students. We are excited to announce that one of our John Jay alumni, Jeffrey Jimenez, has been one of the first winner's in the national City Year Twitter contest! Jeffrey Jimenez was born and raised in Manhattan eventually deciding to pursue his bachelor's degree at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Here he discovered his passion for the sociology of crime. He took particular interest in the general lack of quality education in low income areas. As an undergraduate he addressed these issues by volunteering with several offices on campus. He graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and minors in philosophy and economics.

Post-graduation Jeffrey decided to get involved in City Year in order to give back to his community and further involve himself in working on educational access issues. In this role he has been able to make positive changes in children's lives. He has been tweeting about this experience as part of the #makebetterhappen campaign. The #makebetterhappen campaign is an integrated marketing campaign rooted in Twitter that features actual City Year corps members in and around the schools they serve. Because of Jeffrey's impact and the stories he's shared over Twitter, he was selected out of 2500 corps members to fly to City Year Los Angeles to engage in best practice sharing with corps members at that site.

We are very excited to see our alumni succeeding and continuing their work towards social justice. We wish Jeffrey all the best as he continues on his academic and professional journey. The John Jay Senior Edge is a NEW program created by the Center for Career & Professional Development to assist student with finding their first full-time position after finishing their undergraduate or graduate degree.

 

Participating in the John Jay Senior Edge YOU will learn:

• how to search for a position
• how to write effective resume and cover letter
• how to create a professional social media image
• how to network using professional business etiquette, including dining, meetings, and communication
• how research the industry, employer, and position
• how to interview and what to wear

 

THE BIG COMMITMENT:

The John Jay Senior Edge meets once a week, either a Wednesday or Thursday from 1:45pm - 2:45pm, for ten weeks.  The program begins the week of March 11^th and ends the week of May 6^th, 2013.

New York City Urban Fellows

The New York City Citywide Administrative Services office held an information session on campus to discuss the New York City Urban Fellows Program. The program was founded in 1969 to attract exceptionally talented and bright recent college graduates to employment within New York City Government.  The program combines nine months of paid city employment with weekly professional development seminars and fun field trips.  The positions Urban Fellows receive are often unavailable to entry level applicants and gives a unique insider view of how city government works. 

When describing the Urban Fellows Program, Mayor Michael Bloomberg stated: "The Urban Fellows Program provides an unparalleled opportunity for young professionals to gain meaningful work experience in public policy, urban planning and government operations as they consider careers in public service. It demonstrates New York City's commitment to shaping future leaders. I am proud to sponsor this program." 

Fellows are exposed to senior city government officials and the challenges of city management.  Through the nine months of membership in the program, Fellows experience the New York City Government in unique and exciting ways.  Fellows take trips to fun NYC locations as well as sites within the government in NYC, Albany and Washington, D.C.  Additionally, Fellows participate in weekly seminars that aid them in growing professionally.  While participating in the program, Fellows engage in community service within the NYC area with organizations such as New York Cares and NYC Service.  Also, the 25 fellows become colleagues and friends, learning from each other along the way.
